The book came across as the characters being miserable constantly. There was no humor or banter like the other books in the series. Even the friendships with the female and male characters which were only featured a couple times in the book were not the fun relationships that appear in the other books. There are usually light hearted fun moments mixed in with the troubles the characters face but that was seriously lacking in this book. Also, their relationship didn't have much of a build up and was just like bam you're supposed to just believe they're in love. Sadie just comes across as a miserable downer. The whole book seemed to be him being patient while forgiving her constantly and Sadie being an insecure annoying mess. I couldn't wait for this book and now I would take a refund if I could. This is my favorite series so this was so disappointing.Tags : Playing for Keeps: A Heartbreaker Bay Novel - Kindle edition by Jill Shalvis. Playing for Keeps A Heartbreaker Bay Novel edition by Jill Shalvis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really liked the other books in this series but this one was nothing like them. The other one star reviews were right on this one. There was no story just back and forth, mainly from the h. In the other books I liked and looked forward to reading about the H but in this but he almost comes across as a sissy. He likes fuzzy naval because they were his grandmother's fave, has anyone ever heard a straight man say those words? Almost like he was the girl chasing the guy who couldn't settle down because of fear. This one was a miss for me, the others are great, good stories and characters, this one just doesn't measure up.
Lindas Book Obsession Reviews “Playing for Keeps” by Jill Shalvis, Avon Books, January 22.2019
Jill Shalvis, Author of “Playing for Keeps” has written a delightful romantic and entertaining story. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Women’s Fiction, Contemporary Fiction and Romance. The time-line for this story is in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events in this story. The author describes her characters as dysfunctional, complex and complicated.
What could be better than a storyline about girl meets boy, or boy meets girl and both meet dog? Tattoo-Artist Sadie Lane sees handsome, charismatic and successful Caleb Parker bending over something and talking quietly. Of course, for all of the animal lovers, it is scared dog. Both of them coax it out, and they decide to keep it. Actually just being acquaintances, they decide to co-parent and share the dog. After taking the dog to the vet, Caleb makes sure that the dog has everything she needs to be comfortable. They do send each other proof of life pictures of the dog when it is each one’s turn to have her.
Both Sadie and Caleb, have their own secretive pasts. Sadie is barely making ends meet, and has the pressure of her sister’s wedding. Caleb does have support from his sisters who tend to investigate any girl he is seeing for his protection. Caleb comes from a hard background as well, and underneath his hard shell is a kind and giving guy. To protect herself from and emotional pain, Sadie plays hard to get, and has a hard shell as well.
I appreciate that the author discusses handicapped pets, emotional problems, family, friendship, communication, love, and hope. I would recommend this enjoyable novel for readers who enjoy this genre. Happy Reading!

What do you have? The beginning of a wonderful book, Playing for Keeps 7th in the Heartbreaker Bay series by Jill Shalvis.
Caleb and Sadie…sigh…both so needy but wanting to go it alone. I loved the way their differences evolved into love and understanding. Both came from overbearing families and both took different roads to become themselves. Coming together, with the help of Lollipop, they realize they’re so much more with each other than without. Arguments, differences of opinion, and then the realization that they’re their perfect match. Loved it!
I’ve been a fan of the down to earth books penned by Jill Shalvis for a long time. She is an ‘auto-buy’ author for me. Her ability to pull emotions out of every day situations is done so well, and her wit and wisdom surrounding life in general, and happily ever after endings specifically, is one of the reasons I love her books.
Sadie Lane has to be the most heartbreaking character that Jill Shalvis has ever written about. The idea of someone cutting themselves can easily be misunderstood. It’s not about the act itself but about having a way to control their pain & situation. In this case, Sadie’s family misunderstood & instead of getting her the right kind of help, they created more pain & hurt by forcing the wrong help on her. For someone fighting for control of their feelings & pain, taking that control away is the worst thing & can cause a lot of damage. Sadie has so many shields up that nobody gets completely through them.
Caleb senses the pain & mistrust that is such a huge part of Sadie & knows he has to take it slow. One step at a time, he manages to sneak past her barriers but it’s always one step forward, two back. Sadie begins to open up as she realizes Caleb has a background that’s far from perfect too.
I loved the way rescuing Lollipop not only brought them together but also opened their hearts the first step. Sadie had to realize he wasn’t just the “suits” he wore & has a tender side. They both lowered their guard due to the empathy for the abandoned three legged dog. She was so cute & quickly became very spoiled!! Sadie may not have had a perfect family that understood her but the guys at the tattoo parlor became her big brothers & were always looking out for her. This wasn’t a lighthearted quick read but I felt it really made me think & engaged my sympathy & emotions. I couldn’t put it down!
