Don't get me wrong: this book is funny. Usually with Christopher Moore, I have several 'laugh out loud' moments. I had a total of one while reading Bloodsucking Fiends. It was quite funny and I did have a smile on my face the entire time. No doubt about it.

What really impressed me was the character development he had in this one. Jody and Tommy are real characters. They act and feel like people that you can care about, not just plot mechanics to move the story forward (ditto for fuel for the joke fire). The Emperor and The Animals are relatively well developed too and they even have their emotional high points in the story too. All in all I would say I am impressed with the characters because I was pulling for a certain outcome near the end and wanted to see and hear more from Jody and Tommy by the end. That is the mark of captivating characters. (and it works since he wrote 2 sequels)

The biggest criticism I would have with this is that the subject matter can get dark. Really dark. Jody is a vampire. I get it. There are some relatively vicious kills though, and while they are punctuated by a joke to try and bring back some levity, they are still brutal none the less. There is one near the end of the book that adds a particularly emotional punch to the plot, leaving the reader torn after all this character development. That one in particular is a double edged sword and you don't quite know how to feel about it.

Good read, just go in realizing that the usually Moore humor is tempered by some dark subject matter.

The first of this trilogy sets the tone of the story. First of all, it is "A Love Story" with a very unique premise. This is a funny book, as are all of Moore's books and quirky as usual. What "violence" there is, is not violent, but necessary to set up the events of how the main character finds herself in the position she's in, and weaves a thread to bring about the next two books in this trilogy. It is an easy read and flows right along in its storytelling. So many great characters and situations. You never can tell where one event will lead to the next, but if you are a Moore fan, you will see little references to characters in other of his books. It's a treat to run across them and takes you back to that particular book and story reminding you of how quirky Moore's writings are. This is a fun trilogy to read and you will wish he would write sequel. But no doubt he will bring them back in another book somewhere down the road. Have fun reading this. I did and couldn't wait to share with my "fiends", I mean friends.
This is the perfect escapist novel for fantasy readers. However, you must like vampires and wry humor. The plot's pretty straightforward, with plenty of winks to the major elements of vampire mythos.

It's funny but not silly, with enough characterization to keep you caring about the vampires and their humans. The pacing is perfect - I didn't find any dull sections. Written in the 1990s, it's also a bit ironic to see characters not keeping in touch when they can't find a pay phone. All in all, these fiends are friends I look forward to reading more about in the series' next two books.
Christopher Moore has the greatest, wacked out, goof ball imagination. I have read many of his books and they are all laugh out loud hilarious. I am a San Francisco native who lives on the east coast and I felt like I was back home as I read his city descriptions. The story is about Jody, a twenty-something girl who is attacked one night by a vampire and wakes up two days later with a dumpster on her back. She gets up, tossing the dumpster right across the alley. "Must be the adrenalin rush I've heard about," she decides. One hand is burned to black crisp because it was not under protection. There is an envelope with $100,000 in one hundred dollar bills with a note telling her that she will need it. It is late at night and her purse is gone. Thank goodness she still has her bus pass in her pocket. She needs to get home to her boy friend...

Chaos and hilarity follow her as she tries to adjust to her new existence. She needs an instruction book and that inconsiderate monster who did this to her just threw money at her. She needs a minion to take care of things when the sun is up and chooses Tommy, a recent arrival from Indiana. Other characters are the Animals, a group of losers who work the 3rd shift at the Marina Safeway where Tommy finds a job courtesy of the Emperor of San Francisco and yes, there really was such a person, a sort of street person with two dogs (his men) beloved by the residents of the city.

A series of gruesome murders begins. The police are puzzled, the Emperor knows it is a vampire but no one can take him seriously. How Tommy and Jody, aided by the Animals, the Emperor and the police figure out just what is going on is one of the funniest books you might ever read. You will not want to put it down and will annoy your family and friends as you constantly laugh out loud.
I have been a fan of Christopher Moore for some time and I bought this book after realizing I didn't have it in my collection. His writing is an acquired taste and you either like it or don't. I mostly like it. This is a terrific and humorous read and I highly recommend it, as well as the other books in this series, You Suck and Bite Me. Worth it for the Emperor alone! Vampires in reality dealing with human problems and humans....
I actually read the sequel before I read this book, but even knowing the ending it was fun. I have enjoyed Christopher Moore's style. The characters are believable. I enjoy the style where many of the characters are "everyday people" , and not doctors, lawyers, millionaires, actresses, or super sleuth detectives, but people you might meet on any large west coast city (San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, etc.) street and not think too much about it. It is an enjoyable romp, for adults when the desire to escape a day of mundane stuff. You can read Bloodsucking Fiends and think okay my life could be worse my significant other could be a vampire.
