Fabulous novel and SO well written. I had expected to skim read the novel and be quite bored because I basically knew the headlines and story on which it was based. But, Ms Meyers made me get emotionally involved, which I had not expected to do. Excellent character study and portrayal. I highly recommend The Widow of Wall Street.

The Widow of Wall Street A Novel Randy Susan Meyers 9781501131349 Books Reviews

Well even if it knocked off the true Bernie mad off story it was a fun read
Reads like the life of Bernie and Ruth. Good story. Could not put it down. Ending was very predictable but sadly the truth.
I listened to this book on CDs so my experience might have been influenced by that forma....but I found this book "OK" but not so riveting as other reviewers.

When a relationship and marriage is based on a lie to begin with, maybe it cannot be real.

There were time I found Phoebe irritating. OK...at the beginning it was some time in the past when women were supposed to let their husbands handle everything, but as the story unfolded, I wondered why she didn't ask more questions and insist on answers.

To me it felt a bit phony that she would say that they didn't need more "things" - houses, car services, fancy offices, etc. - but she enjoyed them! And after the chickens come home to roost, it is revealed that Jake put everything in her name for tax purposes. Wouldn't she have had some idea of what she was signing.

She's smart and college-educated and even started a cupcake business at the non-profit where she works. That part of the story was very interesting to me. It was very real what she went through when the investments failed and the cupcake venture (not to mention a lot of the immigrant women) lost all that was invested.

So, I didn't hate this book but I didn't love it either.
Her writing pulls me in and keeps me there. And it feels wonderful! I can’t explain the feeling well at all but I feel full as I finish each book. Something old school about it that I love and have missed of late.. You can smell it and taste it and it stays with you.
I am a serious reader from early childhood on and have trouble, these days, finding anything that I don’t want to put down or skim.
Her work, I return to with great anticipation and I am so very grateful. I have missed immersing. Anything less is just far too dissapointing. Thank you Ms. Meyers. Fine writing, weaving and richly flowing. I needed this!
I originally thought this would be an intense replication of the Madoff Family. The framework focuses on the over zealous husband, Jake Pierce, with all his foibles, needing to be the richest guy in the room - and the most generous. He was actually cruel and not capable of any genuine tenderness or respect. Randy Susan Meyers did the best job with Phoebe Pierce. Ruth Madoff was presented to the world as a rich woman who was rather dumb and did whatever her husband told her to do. Phoebe had some of these characteristics but she had more depth and the author showed that she was intelligent and did not practice charity for show.

Meyers definitely did use Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme as the backdrop for the vast wealth and ultimate despair. The offices were similar to the Madoff offices and Jake's obsession with watches and things were a definite match. Meyers gave us this type of mania and criminality and placed it in a similar but different family. There were enough differences with the Madoff children and Pierce children to reflect on their pain and suffering. It's quite a story, and we know it is based on a real man who robbed people of their life savings and self-respect. Meyers was smart enough to emphasize that many investors made quite a bit of money and they should have been much smarter to realize that investments are not level, they go up and they go down. Some of the fault rests with the clients.
The story opens with Phoebe visiting Jake who is serving essentially a life sentence in a federal prison for operating an illegal Ponzi Scheme in which most of his relatives and friends lost their fortunes. The story goes back to tell us how we got here. Jake came from modest means and was obsessed with becoming a financial success. Always putting up a front, he lavished Phoebe and their children, Kate and Noah, with expensive, showy gifts. But what he accomplished was never enough, and the crash of 2008 caught up with him. Phoebe is torn on how much she should remain loyal to him. She struggles for respectability, being shunned by almost everyone she knows. But, nagging at her is the realization that early in their relationship Jake had rescued her from what would have been a life changing event, and he did not even know it. Phoebe's choices are not good. She cannot go back to what she was but what should she do. I thought the book was very good and I enjoyed it.
Reading The Widow of Wall Street is a little bit like reading a book after you've seen the movie. It's not fun. You know what's going to happen, there's no suspense, and no surprises. Phoebe (the book's main character, based on Ruth Madoff) is not very likable, and I'm not sure the author meant to make her sound so much as an accomplice of her husband's crimes. Nevertheless, the book is very well written, and quite enjoyable, so I would definitely check out Randy Susan Meyer's other books.
