Billion Dollar Whale The Man Who Fooled Wall Street Hollywood and the World Tom Wright Bradley Hope Books

For a Malaysian like myself who's already very exposed with the details of 1MDB scandal, this book offered more details I never knew. One of the most moving things to me that I didn't know before was how even though the leaders of some govt agencies were working with Najib to cover up his alleged theft, brave and courageous people on the ground in these agencies acted by leaking out the information they had.

The saying goes that all is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. I always thought this was true in our govt at the time, but this book opened my eyes to them being many good men and women even in the govt who did their part.

Thank you Tom and Bradley for the detailed work you put in to write this work. It can't be easy collecting all this information. For that you deserve every star I have to give in this review

Billion Dollar Whale The Man Who Fooled Wall Street Hollywood and the World Tom Wright Bradley Hope Books Reviews

If you’ve ever suspected there was something rotten behind the lavish way some people live, here’s your proof. Lots of books about corruption tell you how or how much money was stolen. This one also shows you exactly what was done with it—paying for ridiculous amounts of champagne, a gross movie glorifying a testerone-fueled swindler, and a pop star to jump out of a birthday cake—instead of what should’ve been done. You might not think the investigative story of how billions of dollars were stolen from Malaysia is somehow connected to you, but you’ll feel differently once you read this almost unbelievable book. The story of the looting of 1MDB is truly global—it cris-crossed countries from Asia through Europe and the Middle East to the US, and drew some of the world’s most famous celebrities into its orbit.
A story so extraordinary and more amazing than fiction.

Here is life imitating art imitating life, where Leo di Caprio and Scorcese inadvertently fund their Wolf of Wall Street movie with money looted from government of Malaysia! The scandal revolves around a Malaysian conman with a billion dollars of cash who lines up Britney Spears, Victoria Secret models and A-list celebrities for the most extravagant party ever in Las Vegas. Through a bizarre series of events and after effortlessly laundering billions of dollars, the protagonist buys himself a massive yacht and dates Miranda Kerr, protected by a feckless Prime Minister of Malaysia. Stranger than fiction but is true reporting of a tragicomedy at the expense of Malaysian tax payers.

Behind this extraordinary fare is skillful, detailed analysis by WSJ reporters that began over 3 years ago. The authors unravel a complex, decade long scheme orchestrated by a psychotic Malaysian huckster aptly dubbed the Billion Dollar Whale. The story begins in off-beat Penang and criss crosses the globe through Abu Dhabi, New York, Hollywood and Vegas, where the whale parties with with Leo and 20 playmates in one scene described in the book.

The book provides rich depth and surprising details, the result of interviews with dozens of people involved. Also the authors’ clearly know Malaysia well, providing context through history and cultural understanding. Ground breaking and reveals a multi-year scheme that exploits disbelief to mask a $4 billion heist, probably the largest ever. As some Malaysians say “tak masuk akal”.

This extraordinary, true-life tale involves money laundering in offshore centers, DOJ investigation of Goldman Sachs and Arabian princes, and the downfall of Malaysia’s prime minister Najib. A must read for anyone in media, entertainment and global finance. Wonderful and immense page turner!
One of the greatest financial scandals in history investigated by journalists from one of the world's leading financial newspapers. Alas, they have chosen to go the tabloid route, which presumably raises a higher probability of a lucrative movie rights sale, rather than serious investigation.

First the praise. This is very readable account of an almost incredible financial fraud. The sums of money involved are mind-blowing and for the principal culprit to have achieved this from a starting point of an everyday regular person is inspiring or terrifying according to your viewpoint. Large numbers of celebrities are identified as having essentially demeaned themselves for financial reward. This is the tabloid approach, including micro detail about what champagne they drank, where they drank it, where their jewellery came from etc. etc.

Alas, though, the analysis of the financial fraud leaves vast numbers of questions unanswered. Just one example The Malaysian (as he is frequently referred to throughout the book) regularly deceived the banking community by opening accounts in the names redolent of huge and solid financial institutions. The tabloid reader might be inclined to think "What a cunning rogue!" but the reader seeking quality journalism wants to know how such an obvious trick managed to fool the banks. To put this into more everyday terms, if I opened bank accounts with names redolent of Warren Buffett or Bill Gates, the bank which believed me might well expect huge cashflows to appear, but they would surely realise that this could well be the fraudulent action of a money launderer and would undertake due diligence to ascertain the veracity of the account. Issues such as this are not pursued inside the book.

Good luck to the authors in selling the movie rights, but I was hoping for serious investigation.
