Hillier does an excellent job holding back the twist until the very end, meting out information to keep you guessing but also leaving clues with a masterful subtlety that will take your breath away. This is my new favorite Hillier book which is saying a lot because they are all incredible. Jar of Hearts is being made into a movie and I can't wait to see this exquisitely crafted story play out on the big screen. Hillier is a powerhouse, without question one of the best thriller writers out there right now. Get this book and then clear your calendar for the next 24 to 48 hours. You'll be begging for more.

Jennifer Hillier has always been an intriguing author to me. There's no doubt she writes page-turner novels, but I found myself only giving her mediocre reviews for some reason, perhaps she to the execution and predictability of her stories. Jar of Hearts, however, is a vast improvement over her previous books. A good thriller is hard to write, especially if your audience members are those who consider themselves aficionados of the genre. Predictability is always a problem, but in this one, Ms. Hillier manages to avoid this problem. This novel is deeper and the character of Geo is well-developed. Kudos to you, Jennifer Hillier. Well done. I will keep reading. Four stars instead of five due to some minor editing errors and one slightly confusing chapter. Recommended.
"I loved JAR OF HEARTS. I pre-ordered the book months ago but when I lucked upon an advanced reading copy I devoured it in two days--quite rare for me since I'm both a slow reader and don't devote enough time to reading. JAR OF HEARTS demanded my time, however, and I happily gave in.

At this point in my writing career, it's difficult for me not to analyze how the sausage is made, and in JAR OF HEARTS, Jennifer does a few of things particularly well. First, the way the story unfolds is unique, unexpected. It doesn't follow a typical structure which is refreshing and brings me to point two. Jennifer doles out information really effectively in this book, and part of that is the overall way she chose to tell the story. Finally, Jennifer strikes the difficult balance of making me wonder if her protagonist, Geo Shaw, really got what was coming to her (given her crime, which is pretty awful), while at the same time making me sympathize with her to the point of thinking she didn't deserve the punishment she got. Geo is flawed, like we all are, which makes her experiences almost relate-able, as in "what would I do if...?"

I'm excited to see how this book does when it's out in the world. For my part, I hope it sells like crazy. Talk about the perfect summer read!"
I’m a big fan of Jennifer Hillier. In her latest book, “Jar of Hearts”, Ms. Hillier crafts a psychological thriller that invites the reader to employ their three dimensional thinking skills in an emotionally charged story that is structured around the five stages of grief/loss. And there is a lot of loss. Since these stages are not necessarily experienced linearly, JOH presents the timeline of events non-linearly. We learn what the characters encounter and how they feel, always in bits and pieces while moving forward and back in time. As the story progresses, we aggregate our knowledge of events and validate why the characters feel the way they do. This is a powerful plot device. There are many twists. These are characters that I cared about, despite their often chronic missteps, and the gruesome/grotesque nature of the underlying murders. The book captures the full intensity and complexity of our ability to process waking nightmares, and our capacity to navigate the intricately woven web of the human condition. Highly recommended.
This was an engaging book that sucked me in from the first chapter! I read the first chapter and it haunted me until I bought it, and I’ve seriously never spent $13 on a book-especially a kindle book!-in my life. This book consumed me and I couldn’t stop reading it! But the ending was seriously terrible. A complete let down, anticlimactic, utter disappointment of an ending that ruined the book entirely. I wish I could return it because I never want to read or look at it again. The end was rushed, a disappointment and poorly written. It left a bitter taste in my mouth.
